What are the requirements for installing a fireplace?
A booklet on fireplace installation standards is available at the fire station. For special cases, a fire department expert will be pleased to meet with you. |

Can someone come inspect my chimney and/or my fireplace?
If you leave your address and phone number at the fire department, an inspector will visit your home. However, since only the Assistant Chief is employed fulltime and all other firefighters work on call, there may be a slight delay, especially for people who are home only evenings and weekends.  |

Where should smoke detectors be installed?
On each floor of your house, near the bedrooms. To rememberabout checking the batteries, develop the habit of doing it twice a year, when you reset the clocks. Also, regularly use a vacuum cleaner to remove the dust from your smoke detectors. |

What is a carbon monoxide detector and where should it be installed?
This device detects carbon monoxide, a colourless, odourless gas that can be fatal if inhaled. Install a carbon monoxide detector near the bedrooms. A second detector placed near the furnace or other heating equipment increases your safety. |

How often should fire extinguishers be checked and refilled?
At least once a year, even if the extinguisher has not been used.  |

Do you collect empty propane bottles?
Yes, you can take them to the Public Works Department during household hazardous waste drop-off periods indicated on the calendar. |
